Causes of Cat Bad Breath – Symptoms and Solution

There are many causes of cat bad breath. Kittens are known for being  clean animals, and loved most to be kept as home pet around the world. If you go nose to nose with your cat while sleeping and give her a loving sniff and If it is not sweet breath then you definitely would not like to let your cat sleep with you.

 We may not expect our feline friends to have breath as fresh as perfume. Bad breath is not often a problem but  if you continuously noticing the strong bad odor of your cat then its not normal just as eyes are windows into soul, cat bad breath smell is window to her health.
Causes of cat bad breath are mostly problems with the teeth or gums but can also be due to more serious medical conditions. In fact, around 75 % of cats over the age of three have dental disease and smelly breath is usually one of the first signs pet owners notice.

Causes of Cat Bad Breath

There are different causes of cat bad breath from oral hygiene to some serious diseases,lets have a look on them,

Periodontal Disease :

This is one of the the most common Causes of Cats Bad Breath. Periodontal disease is an infection that is a results of build up of dental plaque on the surfaces of the teeth around the gums, according to the Vet the bacteria in dental plaque irritate the gum tissue, if plaque is allowed to build up can lead to infection in the bone surrounding the teeth. Within just a few days, plaque can mineralize and harden into tartar, which provides a rough surface that makes it easier for more plaque to accumulate.
Consistent oral hygiene can prevent periodontal disease from coming back. Brushing your cat’s teeth every day is the best thing you can do.First a cat should get used to you lifting her lip, then touching the teeth, then introducing the brush in the mouth, and finally the act of brushing. Going slow and offering positive reinforcement will increase the chances of success. If you ignore periodontal disease, it can lead to tooth loss, bleeding gums, pain, and other problems.

Food Particles :

Particles of food in mouth is also one of the causes of cat bad breath. Some time it mostly happens that some food particles stuck in cat’s mouth or between teeth or throat such as a stick or a bone it will often start to smell bad. You may also notice your cat pawing at their mouth or face.

Kidney Disease :

Infection in kidney is also one of the major causes of cat bad breath. If your cat breath smells like ammonia or urine, it could be kidney disease, which is not uncommon in cats  at ages 8 or older, Kidney disease causes waste products to build up in the body.
This can cause breath to smell like ammonia. In addition to  bad breath,cats with kidney disease can appear lethargic and may experience weight loss, drink more water, and urinate more frequently and in greater volume.

Age Factor :

When kittens become older just like people, their routine tasks become harder. Your feline friend may feel too tired or stiff to thoroughly groom him or herself any more.
Your kitten may not only breath smell bad, but their fur is likely to look a bit disheveled and not as smooth and shiny as it was when they were younger. If this happens, it may be time to think about washing your cat or having him or her groomed professionally.

Bacteria :

This is one of the the most common Causes of Cat Bad Breath. Odor production of bacteria build up in cat mouth and most likely is the cause of cat bad breath. An over abundance of bacteria can occur if you fail to clean your pets teeth, allowing tartar and plaque to build up.

Mouth Cancer :

Cancers in the mouth often become infected and start to smell. This is also one on the main causes of cat bad breath. Your vet may need to put your cat under anesthetic or sedate your cat to look properly in the mouth. Cancers in this area can be difficult to treat but finding them early can help.

Liver Diseases :

Problem in liver functionality is also one of the major causes of cat bad breath. Liver disease leads to waste products entering the lungs. This causes a foul, sweet, musty breath.

 Bacterial infections in the lungs, sinuses or windpipe can cause bad breath.

Diabetes :

This is also one on the main causes of cat bad breath. If diabetes is not properly managed the body starts to break down fat, this causes the breath to smell sweet similar to pear drops or nail polish remover to avoid it its recommended not to give cat food full of carbohydrates.

Problems in Gut :

Infection or blockage of gut will mostly make the breath smell bad in cats. You will often notice other signs such as diarrhea, vomiting or stomach pain before noticing the bad breath.

Medical Problems :

Various cat breeds are prone to suffering from medical issues. The most common ones that cause bad breath are stomach problems, gum disease, gastrointestinal issues, and tooth decay.Again talk to your vet if you think cat might be suffering from something health related.

Diet :

Some diets can cause a cat’s bad breath  smell  than others. Fish based diets can cause a fishy smelling breath. Just like humans, cats may find themselves in need of an additional boost for shinier fur, for a stronger immune syste or for better breath. If you’ve recently changed your cat’s diet or if you’re feeding her low quality food products, this may result in bad breath. Talk to your vet to determine if this is the issue. Either one may cause other side effects too.
